Channing's Oklahoma Connections

Broadway legend Carol Channing died Tuesday in California. She was 97.

Channing was best known her Tony-Award winning lead in the musical "Hello, Dolly," and also as being a tireless advocate for inclusion of the arts in public schools.

For decades, Oklahoma City's Civic Center Music Hall was located at what was once called Channing Square, which was named in her honor.

Channing's son, Chan Lowe, was an illustrator for the Oklahoma City Times newspaper from 1978 to 1984. In 2011, Lowe was inducted into the Oklahoma Cartoonists Hall of Fame.

Carol Channing would have celebrated her 98th birthday, on January 31st.
