Samantha Snyder has a love for gardening that was planted by
several of her family members a long time ago. One could say it is in her
genes. She grew up in Northwest Arkansas on a farm, and has always had a love
for all things agriculture.
She left Arkansas to attend Oklahoma State University and
had intended to study Agricultural Business. Samantha soon realized the amount
of math that was involved in that degree program (who would have thought – math
and business) and began seeking a new one. Horticulture came to the forefront
and the story began there.
After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Horticulture in
2005 she began work as a horticulturist with the OSU Extension Service in
Norman, Oklahoma. There she spent time helping homeowners be successful in
their landscapes. She also led the Cleveland County Master Gardener program in
community gardening and educational projects.
Samantha met her husband, John, while working in Norman.
That led to a move to the Oklahoma County Extension Service, where she had
similar job duties. The Oklahoma City position afforded her more experience
with the commercial side of horticulture as she began working with groups like
the Oklahoma Nursery and Landscape Association and the Oklahoma Arborist
Association. She also completed her Master’s Degree while working in Oklahoma
County. She earned a Master’s of Science in Educational Leadership Studies with
an emphasis in Higher Education.
After having her first child in 2009, Samantha got a better
offer to stay at home full time with Laurel, her daughter. She left the OSU
Extension Service and now teaches for the OSU-Oklahoma City Horticulture
Department. One of the biggest joys she gets from being involved in
horticulture is the chance to help others learn and be more successful in their
gardening endeavors.
Samantha and John welcomed daughter number two, Paige into
the world in January of 2011 and reside in Edmond on a two and a half acre
piece of property that they are improving one tree at a time. Sam also does consulting
for homeowners and commercial entities that would like some additional help or
input for their landscapes. She can be contacted via the radio show or at gardentutor@live.com.
