State Auditor and Inspector Gary Jones is adding eight new Honda Civics to the agency's fleet, which all run on compressed natural gas.
Jones says the cars average about 30 miles per gallon.
"One employee reported it cost less than five dollars to fill-up after driving 188 miles," Jones told KTOK.
The cars are estimated to save about $20,000 in maintenance and fuel costs over the life of the vehicles.
