A House bill called the Protect Against Pedophiles Act is advancing out of a Senate committee.
Senator Kyle Loveless of Mustang says it requires school volunteers to undergo criminal background checks, if the school district deem the checks are needed.
"Texas has gone through this process. They originally did employees of school districts, Then, volunteers, as well," Loveless said.
Under the bill, prospective volunteers would mean a parent, guardian or any individual who might come into contact with students as a school volunteer.
School districts would be free to determine if the background checks should be required.
The House bill is now set to go before the full Senate.
