Deborah Van Wagner says it's often hard for small business owners to secure loans. "We seem to be held to a higher criteria of credit ratings in order to get a small business loan," she said. "Big corporations who have money in the bank are loaned money." Van Wagner owns Fancy Cakes, Etc., a Norman company which custom designs cakes. She met today with Congressman Tom Cole and state Representatives Aaron Stiles and Emily Virgin. State Representative Scott Martin, who was along for part of Thursday's three-stop tour, said some federal rules are draining small businesses. Martin said the owner of a medical records keeping business in Norman told him she would like to hire ten new employees, but federal rules prevent it. "They're having to meet a lot of new standards and new obligations which weren't there before federal health care was passed," Martin said. Van Wagner said she hopes lawmakers see how federal and state government can do a better job helping women who own small businesses.
